Tunnel Portals and Rock Castings

This weekend I spent getting the tunnel portals installed on the western mountain. The portals themselves are from Chooch Enterprises. They're simply hot glued to the scenery base around the tunnels. I had to cut three of the portals for a wider entrance to allow my passenger fleet to pass on through them on those sharp curves. I used my new Ryobi band saw with a 1/8" blade to cut them, hence they have an irregular look to them. I should have filed them a bit smoother, but didn't really notice the problem until they were installed.

Next I made some rock castings from light weight Hydrocal and some molds I picked up at my local hobby shop. I colored them as follows:

  1. Sprayed on a thin wash of india ink and water
  2. Dabbed on dilute WS Ochre Yellow
  3. Dabbed on dilute WS Burnt Umber
  4. Dabbed on dilute WS Raw Umber
  5. Brushed over with dilute WS Stone Gray

So far the castings are bit darker than I would like (I didn't dilute the Stone Gray enough), but I'll reserve judgement until they're completely dry to see if they lighten up any.

The castings are hot glued in place and Sculpt-a-mold is used as "mortar" to fill in the cracks. The Sculpt-a-mold is pre-colored using WS Stone Gray. It dried a lot lighter than it looked when I mixed it up! That's OK, a final pass of coloring should fix that.
