Roads

I spent the last week or so constructing the eastern mountains. I started with foam-core art-board to make the tunnel lining. I covered this up with wadded up newspaper to form the basic landscape contour. Then I applied plaster cloth over it to create the hard-shell base. The next step is to apply sculptamold over the base. I wanted to try out my new "earth" color, a 50-50 mix of "Popcorn Kernel" and "Earth Tone" from ACE hardware. I diluted this with 2 parts of water and mixed it up with sculptamold in equal parts. I applied this to the "southern" half of the mountain, the "northern" half I wanted to stain a rock color so I left the sculptamold uncolored there. Finally, I painted the upper reaches of the "northern" half with the same earth color I used to color the "southern" half, and stained the cliffs a rock color. I started with a thin water wash of india ink, followed by thin washes of yellow ochre, burnt umber and stone gray. The sculptamold accepts stain much more slowly than the hydrocal rock castings do so it took several applications to get it to this point.
